1990s

In the 1990s, the youth culture had three main categories, grunge, pop, and lad, and fashion culture. The group that follow the grunge theme mainly wore baggy jeans, t shirts and checked shirts. Following the pop culture which mainly consisted of girls following spice girls, which would mainly dress in skirts.

BBC Article 1995 “ecstacy pill puts party girl in coma”

NY times 1994 “Kurt cobain, hesitant poet of ‘grunge rock’ at 27”

BBC article “Violence flares in poll tax demonstration”

Danny boyle train spotting

The film trainspotting (danny boyle, 1996) follows the newpaper articles of that time, as this film contains a lot of raving, violence, and drug taking which a variety of my newspaper quotes that I found had some aspects in which link to this film.

Trainspotting represented young people as being party animals, who take drugs to take there mind off things, this links to Stanley halls theory of “ adolescence is a time of storm and stress when all young people go through some degree of behavioral upheaval” it aslo ties in with osgerby and hedbridges theory of “youth is portrayed in two ways, either fun or trouble” because most people will either see the characters in this film as causing a lot of trouble, or people will see that they’re having a good time.

The juxtaposition in this film in terms of music and images both had an enormously big contrast as when there would ever be any grim or sad scenes there would never be any sad music it would always play happy upbeat music, which didn’t make you feel bad or sorry for the characters on screen. However if they had played appropriate music people could of taken the film more seriously, and had a different effect on people.

1945 – world war 2 ends.
Post war austerity

Baby boom – large growth population
Invention of the teenager –
Commodification of society – new inventions during the war
Birth of the modern nuclear family
Birth of global broadcasting- cinema, tv,
Gender politics – women have more rights
Social and cultural change

Between the years of 1945 and 1960 there was a huge change, mainly revolving around the representation of youths at that time. After world war 2 had ended there was a baby boom, meaning that there was a large growth in population at this time resulting in Britain being a younger country. free schooling was brought in which meant that everyone could go, this also helped the change in representation of youths in that time.

1960s

The 1960s introduced Mods, Rockers, and hippies. The youth was portrayed negatively in the press with newspapers headlines saying ‘Mods and Rockers jailed after seaside riots’ A quotes from that newspaper article read ‘A mod got pushed through a window and got badly cut he was pouring with blood. It was really nasty and there was this copper holding this lad and he was quite emotional: ‘for Christ sakes, just look at this! He said’ this article links with hedbridges theory of “youth is trouble” (1988). The 1960s also introduced a lot of change, such as contraception, the rise in super models and drugs.

were youth copying what was being said in the articles.

The Mods wore designer suits protected by Parka jackets and were often armed with coshes and flick-knives. They rode Vespa or Lambretta scooters bedecked with mirrors and mascots and listened to Ska music and The Who.
Rockers rode motorbikes - often at 100mph with no crash helmets - wore leathers and listened to the likes of Elvis and Gene Vincent.

“A Mod got pushed through a window and got so badly cut he was pouring with blood. It was really nasty and there was this copper holding this lad and he was quite emotional: ‘For Christ’s sake, just look at this!’ he said.
